Description

From the Dust Jacket
From the first blacks brought to this country in chains, slaves came up with ingenious ways to escape to freedom. During their long perilous journeys, most would not have survived without the Underground Railroad. No one knows how many slaves escaped, or how many people were involved in trying to help them. Few written records were kept, but hundreds of stories have survived from the Underground Railroad. Two slaves, light-skinned Ellen Craft, dressed as a man, and her husband, William, traveled north disguised as a white owner and his slave. Henry Brown “shipped” himself in a sealed box, emerging after twenty-six hours in Philadelphia, a free man. Harriet Tubman risked capture again and again, returning to the South to bring out more than three hundred slaves. Award-winning author Jim Haskins tells the history of the Underground Railroad, including many courageous stories of both the slaves and the people who helped lead them to freedom.
