Description

From the Dust Jacket
When Caleb Dulaney’s family loses its fortune in 1858, Caleb is sent to northern Texas to live with his grandmother until his father can raise some money. There he meets his haughty cousin Edith and good-natured Micah, who has a head full of superstitions and pockets full of good-luck charms. In Caleb’s new home, people are violently divided over the Fugitive Slave Law—the law that makes it a crime to help a runaway slave. Even Caleb isn’t sure if he’d help a slave to flee. But when he is rescued from drowning by an escaped slave, Caleb feels that he has a debt to repay. To help a cause he is not sure he believes in, should he break the law and risk his life by tangling with the dangerous and vicious slave catchers? Award-winning author G. Clifton Wisler has woven a gripping and often humorous story about the little-known path of the Underground Railroad in Texas.
