The Story
(This operetta is a story which is acted out on the stage while Glenda, a little girl who sits outside the curtain, pretends to be reading it from a book.)
It is a few days before Christmas. In the living-room the three Elgin children, Phyllis, Larry and Shelley are quarreling. All are afraid they are giving more than they are going to get for Christmas. The girls refuse to help Larry wrap his presents. He thinks it is foolish to send Christmas cards when they are soon to be burned. The children go to bed very unhappy. While lights are dimmed, six new and six old Christmas cards come to life and climb from their boxes. They gather in the living room. At first they are happy and sing jolly songs; but then the old cards begin to mourn because they have heard they are soon to be burned. They all call for Christmas Spirit who comes and promises to help them. That night she brings each of the three children a beautiful dream about the true meaning of Christmas. The next evening, because of their dreams, the children are unselfish and kind to each other. They decide to make scrap books of Christmas cards for children in hospitals. They go to bed happy. The cards, who have heard nothing of the good news, once more come from their boxes. They are visited by a Snow Man and a group of Frost-bites. After they fix a Little Lost Card with a new address, they again begin to mourn their sad fate. Christmas Spirit enters and tells them the glad news and the play ends with rejoicing.
