In recent years our society has watched a progression of leaders fall from grace. We have seen political leaders who have wound up in jail, religious leaders who have fallen into sexual sin, and entertainment leaders who have died because of their drug use and risky behaviors. In nearly every case, the cause of the fall stems from pride. The Bible tells us that pride goes before a fall. The very leaders who should be setting the examples are the ones who seem to become insulated from the real world, accountable to no one, and set up for a fall. It appears as though every leadership position includes the enticement of pride. People want to take credit for their success and in doing so they forget about God. The life of David, as described in 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles, offers a wonderful picture of God working in a leader’s life. The story reveals David’s vulnerability, mistakes, and attitude as he attempts to re-establish his relationship with God. David always found his way back to the Lord. In this study we will explore the life of King David, from his early days on the throne to his last days. We will discover principles for living and encouragement as we see how David handles the troubles in his life. If David, with all his weaknesses, can be called “a man after God’s own heart,” then there is hope for all of us.
