About the Play
Devastatingly funny! A look at the fads and foibles of “the roaring twenties” that will bring forth dynamic laughter and applause. When everybody was doing The Charleston and The Flapper Girl reigned supreme. Dexter and Jessie Dunning and their three children are the average American family. Jessie has become proficient in calming down her unruly spouse on the many occasions when Dexter loses his temper and flies off the handle. Into their peaceful home comes Jessie’s ne’er-do-well brother, Jay Desmond, who ran away from home when a mere youth and whom everybody believed to be dead. Jay calmly announces that he is weary of roaming and has decided to settle down and make his home with his sister and her family. Dexter hits the ceiling! Nobody is going to sponge off him, certainly not a loafer like Jay. But he finds out to his dismay that there isn’t anything he can do about it. A month later Jay is still “relaxing” at the Dunnings’ home when a local bank informs Jessie that somebody (nobody can find out who) has opened an account in her name and deposited ten thousand dollars to her credit! “Mama has got herself a sugar daddy, and she don’t know who he is or how she got him!” exclaims fourteen year old Della Dunning. Not until the very final curtain do we find out who Jessie’s benefactor is and the audience is treated to one of the funniest scenes in many a moon. Specialties are spotted throughout the manuscript and we are sure you’ll agree with us that “The Roaring Twenties” is in a class by itself.
