Description

The Story
Only two characters have speaking parts in this avant-garde play of the Guide and the Old Lady. She enters the gallery timidly, afraid of having lost her ticket and eager to meet the artist. The guide shows her about. The first statue reminds her of Papa. She even waves at the statue—when the Guide isn’t looking—and the statue waves back. The next statue, “Womanhood,” is very like Mama. Now both statues wave at her as she goes on reminiscing and wishing her son were with her. The Guide reassures her. His turn will come later. Again she is struck by a likeness: the third statue is so similar to her late husband! But now she feels increasingly uneasy. Maybe she should start over? The statues no longer return her secret waves. She’s puzzled too. Why is the fourth pedestal empty? If only her son would come! And he does appear—but alas—he doesn’t hear her anxious yoo-hoos. But she sees him joined by an attractive girl. The two embrace and freeze in that embrace while the Guide leads her inflexibly to the empty pedestal. 4 Men, 3 Women
