Description

From the Book Back
Young Lance, a Plains Indian, is surely his father’s son when it comes to the courage, the daring, and the ability needed for earning great honors in the wars and councils of his tribe. Yet his ambition goes even beyond this. For he wishes to record the history of his people. With eyes like the eagle he captures, he watches all that is done—the warring, the buffalo-hunting, how a winter is spent—and shows it in pictures drawn in the dust or on skins with charcoal and color sticks. But catching the story of a people is not for an impulsive youth. It is the work of a dedicated man, one who sees objectively, selflessly, and puts it all down in truth. The man who can do this is equal to the greatest hunter and the bravest warrior. He could be worthy to woo the loveliest maiden. Many seasons pass, with much adventure, hardship, and sorrow. Then, finally, the village of Sun Shield sings Lance’s new name: Story Catcher, recorder of the history of his people.
