Description

From the Introduction
On the last page of the last chapter of this book there appears the declaration: Education is the chief cornerstone of democratic government. These words are a ringing keynote of American citizenship—today more than ever before. The more that we, as individuals, come to cherish the freedom and democracy of our American life, the more will we value an informed discretion in public affairs. Civics is a study that fortifies that discretion. It examines our way of living as a national community. It is a study of our traditions of liberty, our Constitution and laws, our institutions of government, and the principles underlying our relations with the rest of the world. Civics takes a measure of the citizen and his rights and duties. It surveys local community life within the nation. It is, in short, a subject aimed at the enlargement of that education which most insures the health of democratic government. Civics embodies the foundation knowledge of an informed electorate.
