Description

From the Dust Jacket
A walk through the heart of an ancient English town can provide an inexhaustible series of discoveries and delights. Short Walks in English Towns takes the energetic rambler or casual stroller on a guided tour of ten of England’s most charming and picturesque towns or cities — Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury, Chester, Lincoln, Norwich, Oxford, Salisbury, Shrewsbury and York. Each town displays the architectural wealth and variety of centuries of continuous habitation: Roman walls and arches, soaring medieval cathedrals and tranquil cloisters, half-timbered Tudor houses in a jumble of backstreets, elegant Georgian squares, grand Victorian town-halls and innovative modern buildings. But this rich cultural heritage is only a part — albeit a highly significant one — of a town’s special character. Bryn Frank also captures the everyday life of the towns and their inhabitants, from the bustle of shops, pubs and streetcorners to the more leisurely surroundings of gardens and riverside walks. Further guidance is provided by remarkable three-dimensional maps, specially drawn for the book by Hubert Pragnell. These allow the reader not only to follow the route clearly through tiny alleys and open squares but also to identify and appreciate individual buildings at a glance. The sense of place is given an added dimension by Derry Brabbs’s photographs, which explore in brilliant colour and black-and-white the grand vistas and picturesque corners of these historic towns. A beautiful, practical and dependable companion, this book will enable the armchair traveller and ardent walker alike to enjoy some of England’s most attractive sights.
