Description

From the Dust Jacket
Johanna Ruth Dobschiner tells the dramatic, often horrifying story of her childhood as a persecuted Jew in Nazi-occupied Holland. It is the intimate, moving account of one young girl who miraculously survived a tragic moment in history. Born in Germany to orthodox Jewish parents, Johanna Ruth enjoyed a secure, happy childhood until a wave of anti-Semitism swept through the country, forcing her family to flee to Holland. There life returned to normal — but not for long. Five years after their arrival, the Dobschiners awoke one morning to the sounds of invading German soldiers. From that day on they lived in constant fear. Having escaped the claws of the advancing bear for five years, we knew ourselves to be in a trap. From now on every day had its own unpleasant surprises. First came the brutal arrests of the Dobschiners’ sons. Then, one dreadful night, soldiers came for the whole family. Johanna Ruth’s parents and the foster children were taken, yet somehow she was left behind. Thus began Johanna Ruth’s struggle to survive. Brave and resourceful, she managed to sidestep the enemy in a series of narrow escapes, yet she realized that this was becoming impossible. In desperation she accepted an offer to go underground and lived until the end of the war in hiding places provided by sympathetic Dutch families. It was in the attic room of one of her hiding places that Johanna Ruth learned about Jesus Christ. She began reading the New Testament merely out of curiosity, yet she became more and more impressed by the prophet Jesus Christ and his teachings. She realized that He was the Messiah her people had been waiting for, and she accepted Him as her own personal Saviour. Unconsciously He had stolen His way into my life, and I could no more think of God the Father without visualizing Jesus Christ. Slowly, but surely, I learned to consider Him, weighing my actions and aims as they would affect Him and His cause. Selected To Live is an unforgettable true story powerfully climaxed by the thrilling realization that through Jesus Christ all men are selected to live.
