Description

From the Dust Jacket
Jerome Bruner is our best-known psychologist, a man whose work on the nature of cognition and perception in the last few decades has changed our own understanding of childhood, the acquisition of language and its use. How does a specialist in perception approach his own story? “It’s better not to know too clearly at the start what you are looking for lest you find it,” he tells us. “Yet there are some peculiar reasons why looking back in just that way is what one had better do in exploring the course of an individual life.” In Search of Mind is an extraordinary autobiographical inquiry which not only explores the author’s own experience but also describes the men and women who have contributed to the growth of psychology in the last half century. What emerges is an intensely personal and rigorous look at the growth of the field and his own part in it. We come to know a man whose relentless intellect defied categorization. Bruner did not tolerate the limitations of psychology; he fought constantly to create a bridge between science and the humanities. And, likewise, his work expanded beyond the strict limits of psychology to embrace other disciplines related to cognition and motivation: the growth of language; the issues of education itself.
