Description

From the Dust Jacket Fly Leaf
The author presents interesting and impressive information about eighteen female rulers who wielded power in their own right, as regents, or as usurpers. Some of the lovely ladies ruled wisely, others not so well, but all left their mark in one way or another. Beginning with Hatshepsut of Egypt, fifteenth century B.C., the book covers Cleopatra; Boudicca who fought the Romans in ancient Britain; Theodora of Byzantium; Eleanor of Aquitaine; Margaret who united the countries of Scandinavia; Isabella who made the discovery of a new world possible; the devious and scandalous Catherine de’ Medici; tragic Mary Tudor; Elizabeth I who brought glory to England; Mary Stuart who intrigued and lost; Christine who renounced the kingdom of Sweden; Maria Theresa of Austria; Catherine The Great; Queen Victoria; Tsu Hsi “The Old Buddha,” Wilhelmina of the Netherlands; and finally, Elizabeth II, a gracious, modern monarch. This comprehensive survey is an exciting approach to history. Through anecdote and the juxtaposition of focal figures, the ladies emerge as fascinating leaders, who bring the reader to a better understanding of the periods in which they ruled.
