Description

From the Dust Jacket
For centuries, gardens have inspired their cultivators to write. Whether a simple jotting in a daybook or an eloquent oration on the perfection of a favorite site or flower, garden writing seemingly knows no bounds of geography, chronology, or subject. Twentieth-century America has provided unusually fertile ground for the inscription of green thoughts. Remembered Gardens samples the genre by presenting selections by sixteen writers who reminisce about the beginnings of gardens they have sown and tended. From Mabel Osgood Wright’s musing on her “Garden in the Sun” in 1901 to Eleanor Perenyi’s lyrical exploration of the use of the color blue in planting, from the early 1980s, an impressive array of garden experiences are recounted. Richardson Wright considers issues of enclosure — coming down firmly on the side of gardens for the many, not the few — and opts for demarcation through design and planting, not stone or bricks-and-mortar. Herbert Durand recalls the making of his wild flower garden, while Thalassa Cruso evokes the trepidation and exhilaration attendant on the rescue of a long-forgotten and neglected seaside garden. Ferris Cook has once again drawn upon her library of garden books from the past century to bring together these evocative and informative essays as well as to provide the inspiration for her elegant paintings, which accompany each piece. Inspired by the beautiful stamped designs that adorn the covers of so many books from the 1910s and 1920s, Cook has created exquisite paintings, all reproduced here for the first time, that subtly evoke the verdant worlds of these writers. The result is a remarkable book that will serve as a reminder and an inspiration to anyone whose thumb is even the palest shade of green.
