Description

From the Dust Jacket
Pinion was born on the craggy heights of Mt. McKinley in Alaska. There his parents supervised his first faltering attempts to leave the nest, and taught him to use the capricious air currents and thermals until his flying skill matched their own. They taught him to hunt for food, and by the time he was six months old he was ready to join them in their long flight to their winter home in Texas. On his first journey south, Pinion learned that he had a deadly enemy. Sheep ranchers in southwestern Texas believed that Golden Eagles were killing new-born lambs, and had hired pilots to shoot them out of the sky. In less than twenty years over two-thirds of the Golden Eagles in this country were destroyed. Finally the cry of protest rose loud enough to activate Congress. Through the life of Pinion, Mr. Whitten describes both the natural history of the bird and our democratic procedures which enabled a small group to wage a successful battle to rescue the Golden Eagle from extinction! The lobby of conservationists in Washington, the testimonies of researchers, naturalists, and the sheep ranchers make this a unique and exciting book for young people interested in the continuing fight for the preservation of our wildlife and natural resources.
