What You Get
Five of the most salient comic sketches from the memorable revue at New York’s Phoenix Theatre. Adroit, arched with sophistication, and delightfully clever, they scan modern society with devastating satire. Handy Man (1 male, 2 females) takes off on the do-it-yourself craze. And it ends abruptly when hubby switches from cabinet making to operating on himself for appendicitis. Utter Ecstasy (1 male, 3 females) is about a little old lady aloofly examining paperbacks in search of a proper present. The Ingenue (3 males, 2 females) is an audition of whacky actresses by a producing team that could be sold anything. Upper Birth (4 males, 1 female) explores an efficiency apartment that is overloaded with children and shaggy people. First Prize (3 males, 4 females) is about a woman who wins $50,000 in a flour company’s baking contest. (She used the recipe on the side of the box.) All the sketches are quickly paced for laughs, and are rare pieces for actors to romp in.
