Description

From the Dust Jacket
This is the definitive biography of the man who was unquestionably the greatest American playwright who ever lived, who found this nation’s theatre an attic of Victorian romantic convention and left it a dynamic arena. He was the only American dramatist to receive the Nobel Prize, the only one to receive four Pulitzer Prizes, the first one to achieve international stature and to take his place with Chekhov, Ibsen and Shaw as a titan of modern drama. His acknowledged masterpieces, S.S. Glencairn, The Hairy Ape, The Emperor Jones, Beyond the Horizon, Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, Desire Under the Elms, Mourning Becomes Electra, Ah, Wilderness!, The Iceman Cometh and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, constitute a staggering achievement. Excepting those of Shakespeare and possibly Shaw, these plays are the most widely translated, produced, read and taught in the world today. But perhaps the most remarkable fact about Eugene O’Neill is that his own life was more turbulent and I bizarre than any of his plays.
