Description

From the Back Cover
What role should music play in the Christian home, school, and church? Music can be used for a wide variety of legitimate purposes — for amusement, for pure aesthetic enjoyment, to soothe babies to sleep, to help people work, to inspire patriotism, to sell products. But, argues Dale Topp in this helpful guide, not all music is suitable for all occasions, and those involved in music in the Christian community must be keenly aware of the service music is to perform. For example, music used for worship must be worthy of that task and must not in any way distract the participant from that goal. Topp is sensitive to the prevalence and the sources of aesthetic squalor within the Christian community and is eager to offer a corrective for these conditions. With the needs of the musically untrained foremost in his mind, he steers a course between the highbrow, who accepts only one standard of taste, and the accommodator, who sacrifices good taste to the dictates of every fad. This guide offers practical advice ranging from how to improve congregational singing to how to organize and select choirs in the church and school. For parents who wish to provide their children with musical training, he supplies information on topics as specific as choosing the right piano teacher. For the benefit of school music instructors he discusses such things as motivating children to take an interest in music and minimizing the harmful effects of competition. Of particular interest to both the layperson and the professional musician is the substantial appendix, which lists 1,000 fine recordings of classical, popular, and a variety of other music. It includes a section which classifies recordings according to the special purposes for which they may be used — e.g., for family devotions or to inspire young people who are learning an instrument.
