Description

From the Foreword
Some of you who pick up this book have recently made a momentous decision. You have decided that you will become a Christian. You feel that God has been inviting you to do this, and that now you are ready to accept his Son, Jesus Christ, as your Savior and Lord. You want to declare your lifelong allegiance to him, and you desire to become a member of the church which he established in the world. Your reading of these six chapters—they are neither long nor difficult—will help you understand more fully what it means to be a Christian and a church member. Perhaps you have already declared your faith in Christ and your readiness to follow him; perhaps you have already been received into the membership of the church. Even so, you can find profit in this brief book, for it sets forth for your benefit both your privileges and your responsibilities as a church member. It will answer many of the questions which no doubt are in your mind. It may be that some of you who read these pages became a Christian many years ago. You may have united with the church when you were quite young. With the passing of the years, you have gained added understanding of the Christian life. Church membership has become more meaningful to you. Yet you, too, will welcome the opportunity to think again of all that is involved in becoming a Christian and a church member. A review of these matters cannot fail to increase your devotion to Christ. It will put into your heart a song of gratitude for God’s many blessings. It will give you courage for whatever the day may bring. These chapters have been specially prepared to serve as a textbook in the Standard Leadership Curriculum for the First Series Course, No. 132a, entitled “The Meaning of Church Membership.” Although they have been written with the practices of Baptist churches in mind, it is believed that much of the treatment is sufficiently general to be helpful to those looking forward to membership in churches of other denominations.
