Description

From the Back Cover
In 1902, at the age of 20, Leonie von Zesch graduated from California’s College of Physicians and Surgeons as a dental surgeon, joining the ranks of the few women dentists of the time. She entered practice in San Francisco and within the span of a decade, she practiced in Texas and Arizona as well, and later claimed the title of the first woman dentist in Alaska. But even those extraordinary achievements are only part of her story, for Leonie was also a born writer, and her eyewitness accounts of the San Francisco earthquake and fire are heart-stopping to read. Then her personal adventures begin…setting up dental services for both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets of the U. S. Navy…travels in Texas recounting her family’s connections to the very beginnings of the Lone Star State…and a remarkable 1915 visit to the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. However, it is her 15-year ‘visit’ to Alaska that is the heart of Leonie’s life and her book. She takes the reader with her in travels across the territory by dogsled, Model T, and even bi-plane. She captures the people of Alaska, including the post-gold rush characters and the Eskimos who are witnessing the changes in their homeland. Leonie is even there to greet polar explorers when they land in Nome. Her account of a 1924 tour of the Middle East and Europe includes a memorable Rome street rally (where she encountered Benito Mussolini), and traveling aboard one of the first passenger planes from Brussels to London; there she attended a dinner whose guest list included the Prince of Wales! Leonie – A Woman Ahead of Her Time immerses the reader in another era as seen through the eyes of a woman of extraordinary courage.
