Description

From the Dust Jacket
Here is the exciting story of John J. Pershing who, after a lifetime of military service received the highest rank ever given to an American soldier — General of the Armies. “Black Jack” Pershing’s unparalleled career as a professional soldier spanned more than thirty years during which he experienced more kinds of warfare than any other American general. A “model” soldier, Pershing saw active duty on many fronts. After his graduation from West Point, he fought the last of the Apaches and Sioux, the Spanish in Cuba, the Moros in the Philippines, and the Mexican rebels of Pancho Villa. In the face of personal tragedy, Pershing never lost the courage and dignity that marked his brilliant leadership of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Long after the bloody battles of the Argonne Forest, he worked to build a strong American Army and, although he was 81 when World War II broke out, the General again offered to serve his country. President Roosevelt echoed the sentiment of all Americans when he replied, “General Pershing, you are magnificent!”
