Description

The Foreword
The Sheridan area, once known as Absaroka, the Land of the Crows, can be roughly defined as stretching for a hundred miles in every direction from the town of Sheridan, as that is the approximate extent of the trade area patronizing the metropolis of Northern Wyoming. It is a favored land, rich in soil, in water (the lifeblood of the West), in minerals, and in historic interest. Because of its climate, sheltered as it is from winds and extremes in temperature, and because of its luxuriant grass for horses and game, it was the favorite camping ground of the Indians, particularly in winter. Before the white man came, it was fought over by the various tribes; after the white man’s coming, it was the last stand of the Red Man, fiercely contested to the end. Many interesting sketches have been written of various events occurring in this region. In this booklet an attempt has been made to bring this material, plus some original research items, into a condensed historical sketch which may prove equally useful to local people as a springboard for more extensive study of the region, and as entertainment for visitors passing through our area who wish a “quickie” review of the history of a fascinating part of our country.
