This book is the product of hundreds of meetings with teachers and leaders of adult classes in Protestant churches throughout the United States. These persons represent one of the largest bands of volunteer workers in the country. Each week they give over a million hours of service that other adults may learn more of the Christian way of life. This devotion represents one of the most dynamic expressions of faith through service that is to be witnessed anywhere. During the past decade three major movements have come together to create a new forward thrust in Christian adult education. Group dynamics enables leaders to discover anew the power of small groups thinking and working together. America no longer doubts or debates that adults can learn; they know that they must in this new age of technology and atomic power. They are demanding many new opportunities and procedures in adult education. Moreover, the lay movement is reassessing the meaning of its faith and finding new roles of leadership in the church. The interaction of these three factors causes a dynamic situation in Christian adult education.
