Description

The Introduction
Games are for everyone. The game itself is simply a tool to allow people to have fun in an organized, happy atmosphere. Full and satisfying participation is the goal. Seven chapters in this book provide you with a vast variety of games for all ages, abilities and interests. Certain of the Specialty Games assume prior knowledge of specific skills; these games may be used as the culmination of a teaching or instruction session. This is particularly true of the Nature Games, where “man, the student” has a rare opportunity to learn, through first-hand experience, the phenomena of our natural surroundings. To be able to learn and enjoy together has been the driving force behind the creation of the Nature Games section. Each game has implications far beyond what has been written in this book; the educational aspect cannot be overemphasized. In playing the Nature Games, (and, in fact, all the games in the book) it is hoped that the player may take away the following: 1) an awareness of life and its processes; 2) a comfortable feeling in the out-of-doors; 3) an interest in nature that can lead to life-long pursuits; 4) an understanding of the ways of nature and the development of a concern for the environment; a sense of responsibility for the living things in it. Active Games and Relays provide the opportunity for plenty of physical activity; an atmosphere of fun and cooperation is also engendered. The relays, whether active or semi-active, provide a good variety of programming; short relays do not necessitate lengthy attention spans, making them suitable for ail ages. The constant movement and activity provides a full program for everyone. Quiet games and quizzes can be played any place, any time. At the close of a games session, a couple of quiet games can capture the atmosphere of fun and cooperation that has been in evidence throughout the session. Many of the games in this book have variations listed; ways in which the game can be slightly altered to produce a whole new situation of fun and frenzy. Sometimes, this is the first step to inventing brand new games, and we encourage you to put on your thinking caps as you play each of these games — many new ones will come to life as a result. We hope you enjoy playing and leading these games. And we hope the players to whom you introduce the games may experience the feelings of warmth, good fellowship and exhilaration that come from a session of fun with games. Ready, Set….GO!
