Description

From the Book Back
The Jungle is a vivid book for the modern reader, and not only for its shock scenes or its depiction of the depths to which mankind may be forced through human greed. The modern reader should have no trouble at all in understanding the plight of Jurgis, who is almost destroyed by forces so vast and ambiguous that he comes to grips only with their names and with their minor agents. It is in the representation of this struggle—puny man fighting for survival against a vast shapeless and corrupting system—that the universality and power of The Jungle lies.
