Description

From the Dust Jacket
The American cowboy, that colorful, legendary hero of the old West, has intrigued generations of readers and movie-goers with his deeds of derring-do. The real cowboy, as described in this fascinating factual account, rivals any romanticized fictional character. During the early 1880’s, when the cowboy hit the peak of his activity, some forty thousand young men rounded up, branded, and drove ten million head of cattle and at least one million horses over vast distances that were unsettled and largely unexplored except by Indian tribes. It was a difficult, lonely, often dangerous job that left little time for gunfights, gambling, or other frivolous pursuits. Yet it was often exciting and always appealing to the men who, because they loved the freedom of the range, or whatever their motivation, played an important role in opening up the frontier. The book traces the life and lore of the cowboy from his eighteenth-century origin to his heyday in the late nineteenth century—the clothes and guns he wore, the kind of horse he rode, his special lingo, his social life, and the day-to-day routine of his job. The final chapter discusses how the old-time cowboy has vanished and has been replaced by a modern counterpart who must cope with our mechanized era. A glossary of terms and an extensive guide to further reading supplement the fast-moving text.
