About the Story
Joe didn’t believe in Christmas — or Santa Claus. Cornelia lived in a nice house but in one way was like Joe: she was lonely, too. Cornelia saw Joe and wondered if he might be hungry. She set out a plate of food for him. Both wished they could know the other. But what they didn’t know is that on one night of the year (Christmas Eve) there is someone (Santa Claus) who wants to make children happy, and knows exactly how to do it. When Santa saw Joe, he made a special stop – and asked Joe if he wanted to go for a ride on the sled. NOW Joe was a believer in Santa. As they were flying, Santa let Joe take ahold of the reindeer reins. Santa instructed Joe how to land on a certain townhouse roof so he could make a delivery. He said, “The girl who lives here wrote to me and said that the only thing she needed was a friend.” Santa and Joe went down the chimney. The room was dark and Joe bumped into a table and knocked over a lamp. The crash woke up Cornelia. She cried, “Are you him? Are you really Santa Claus?” The two children recognized each other and introduced themselves. Santa had brought them together and gave them both what each wished most for: a friend. Sometimes friendship can be the best gift of all!
