Description

From Inside Front Cover
Renoir’s brush shaped the revolution in nineteenth-century painting which quickly became known as Impressionism. Working in the open air, directly from nature, Renoir developed the swift, fresh touch which captured the momentary effects of dappling sunlight and which documented the ways that sunlight moulded form and altered colour. This achievement in creating Impressionism during the 1860s and ’70s ranks with that of his friend Monet, alongside whom he often worked, and influenced the development of French art for the remainder of the century. While assessing fully the revolutionary impact of Renoir’s art, Anthea Callen also contributes a fresh analysis of the artist as an exacting craftsman. Renoir was acutely aware of the past and receptive to the values of tradition. His respect for the work of his predecessors, Fragonard for instance, inspired many of his canvases, and Delacroix’s example, including voyages to sun-drenched North Africa, remained a powerful force throughout his career. But above all Renoir was an exemplary technician, and Ms. Callen’s study focuses upon his almost obsessive concern with the quality of his paint, the texture of his canvas and the application of his grounds. Renoir’s individual method of simply putting paint on canvas is penetratingly investigated, and this fresh approach to the practicalities of Renoir’s life as an artist provides a valuable re-interpretation of the progress of his style, explaining the evolution from the early Impressionist masterpieces through his ‘hard-edged’ period to the products of his old age, the lush visions which sum up his potency as an artist and his skill as a craftsman.
