Description

First Paragraph of Preface
More than any of my recent scholarly studies, this guide to materials in English in the field of Renaissance humanism has grown out of my teaching medieval and Renaissance history for nearly two decades. In my courses I have always sought to provide students with full bibliographies on the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and especially in my seminar on medieval and Renaissance humanism, I have developed an extensive reading list as a guide to students’ papers and reports in the field of medieval and early modern cultural and intellectual history. Thus, this bibliography started as an aid to introducing advanced undergraduate students to the bibliographical riches (in English) on European humanism, but I should hope that in its present expanded form it will be useful to a variety of students of the early modern period, including undergraduates and beginning graduate students in such fields as art history, English, Romance languages, and classics as well as history and philosophy. I hope, too, that it will prove valuable to the general reader seeking orientation in the sometimes bewildering field of Renaissance cultural history and even to established academics in other fields who, for whatever reasons, wish to study some aspect of the intellectual history of the Renaissance.
