Description

From the Book Back
This Norton Critical Edition presents the most popular and admired of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Each tale is presented in the original language, but with normalized spelling and substantial glossing for student readers. Included in the text are The General Prologue, The Knight’s Tale, The Miller’s Prologue and Tale, The Reeve’s Prologue and Tale, The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, The Clerk’s Prologue and Tale, The Franklin’s Prologue and Tale, The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale, The Prioress’s Prologue and Tale, and the Nun’s Priest’s Prologue and Tale. Sources and Backgrounds are included for The General Prologue and for each of the nine tales, enabling students to understand the text in light of relevant medieval ideas and attitudes as well as to compare Chaucer’s work to his sources. Critical essays are included by some of the most important Chaucerians of this century — F R. H. DuBoulay, Arthur W. Hoffman, Jill Mann, E. Talbot Donaldson, Donald R. Howard, H. Marshall Leicester, Jr., George Lyman Kittredge, D. W. Robertson, Jr., and Gabriel Josipovici. A Chronology of Chaucer’s life and a chronologically organized Selected Bibliography are also included.
