From the Dust Jacket Back
What makes this book unique? Canyon De Los Artistas records and interprets the historical cave paintings through the eyes of an artist and the words of an adventurer. It is a persona account, expressed through the written word and visual art of the artist, Austin Deuel’s experiences with a remote and isolated area on the Baja peninsula, which is rarely visited by modern man. These events, shared by childhood friends and professional colleagues, are described through colorful and dramatic paintings depicting the stark beauty and the strong character of the Baja California he explored and the mountain people he came to understand, respect and love. Here are thirty-eight original paintings, five bronze sculptures, drawings and a photography section relating scenes of daily chores, routine survival, peaceful moments of reflection and the discovery of a special land. Such natural beauty and unique treasures as these cave paintings are found nowhere else in the world in such size and concentration, other than in China. The cave paintings are an art treasure created by artists who lived approximately eight to nine hundred years ago.
