From the Dust Jacket
When a plump, unsculpted, and definitely brunette Norma Jean Baker sat for her first photo session with Sunset Boulevard photographer Bruno Bernard, what developed was not merely the radiant beginning of a legend, but a romance through a camera lens. The spiritual communion forever bonded an escapee from Nazi Germany and a starlet who would go on to become the most famous face of the twentieth century. Over the next seventeen years, Bernard became Marilyn’s brotherly confidante and father-confessor. In his portraits he brought together the simultaneous innocence and come-hither sensuality, creating a vision of womanhood, transforming from a naive and shy child-woman into the vivacious Aphrodite Marilyn Monroe. It was Bernard who introduced the young Marilyn to William Morris agent Johnny Hyde, who landed her in her first major film role and fell hopelessly in love with her. Bernard ushered Marilyn through the years of ecstasy and anguish that followed — capturing her in perhaps her most famous moment on the set of The Seven Year Itch as her white dress fluttered around her shoulders, at a press conference announcing her divorce from Joe DiMaggio, at moments of beauty and tragedy, vibrance and solitude, triumph and sorrow. Bernard’s vivid portraits reveal the inner beauty of Marilyn Monroe; they’re a panoramic voyage through her years of fresh vitality and on to Hollywood sainthood, chronicled by a man who in his time captured the most important portraits in Hollywood.
