Description

From the Dust Jacket
This is the do-it-yourselfer’s guide to all home wiring tasks. Each chapter explains essential systems, materials, and methods and then shows —step by step —how to make installations in compliance with electrical codes. The book begins by reviewing how home electricity works. Then you learn how to determine your wiring needs and draw up plans for go-aheads by local authorities. You get a complete rundown on tools and how to use them —and on materials and how to select from options. You learn the essentials for small tasks such as installing fixtures and for big ones such as wiring room additions, new houses, older houses. You receive detailed instructions on wiring all the basic circuits and heavy-duty appliances. Special chapters feature the ways of wiring service entrances, rural buildings, outdoor systems, and low-voltage devices such as intercoms and door bells. There’s a chapter on wiring a workshop and another on tests, troubleshooting, and repairs. Plus, the book is loaded with practical tips. For instance, if you want to saw a hole in a plaster wall, you can reduce vibration — and thus excess wall damage —by using a fine-tooth hacksaw blade with a tape-wrap handle. Or, when rewiring a house, you can fasten the tail end of the old wire to the start of the new one. So, when you pull out the old wire, you automatically pull in the new. Over 500 photos and precise drawings show hardware, systems, and step-by-step techniques. Of added note, the text and drawings were prepared with the technical assistance of the National Fire Protection Association, publisher of the National Electrical Code. If you’d like to do electrical work yourself, BASIC HOUSE WIRING will show you how.
