Description

From the Dust Jacket
“Through the oak-floored, oak-staircased hall, through the long low drawing room and into the room where the dead man’s head sat mounted on a silver George III coaster, with only a little butcherly blood dried dark on the silver and the table’s high polish.” Enter Harry Seddall, the unclassified loner in the highly classified world of English intelligence. His assignment to put a discreet end to a one-man vendetta leads Seddall into a conspiracy of power politics in which the ruthlessly civilized players have abandoned all pretense of playing by the rules—and loyalty to any particular side. This assassin’s campaign of vengeance (for a crime no one, save Seddall, wants revealed) upsets the jealous balance of power between MI5, MI6 and Special Branch, rival offices of British intelligence, and sends tremors deep into the CIA and the quiet carpeted halls of Downing Street itself. In defiance of official orders—and unofficial attacks on his life—Seddall tracks the tangled, gory path through a world that makes finer distinctions about port than morals, and the hunter finds his sympathies shifting toward the lone wolf he pursues.
