Description

About the Story
A girl is alone and a bit lonely as she walks beside the road in the “wideness.” She sees a bird just off the road – a “sleeping” bird. She tenderly touches it – then holds it – she senses something secret behind the closed eyes and clamped wings. She strokes it gently. She believes the bird has been waiting there all morning just for her – that it was afraid of the “wideness” of the sky and needed someone to fly beside it. She stretched the wings and held the bird up high in the bright and empty air. She gave it a toss and up and up it goes – and she follows. But the bird falls to the ground – and the girl lays beside her. She knows now that it is dead — and this makes her feel sad and alone. She runs back towards home – and into the arms of her father. She is held, warm, and safe. She vows to go out again the next day – with more confidence.
