Description

From the Dust Jacket
This broad yet rigorous study is concerned with the literature of Western Europe from the 1580’s to the 1680’s. It attempts to ascertain certain unifying principles underlying the practice of poets, dramatists, and prose writers during that age of extraordinary creativity, variety, and richness. The terms Baroque and Mannerist are given extremely careful definition, and particular attention is paid to three phenomena which are of crucial importance for an understanding of both individual works and the general tenor of the age: the idea of the world as theater, the concept of art as play, and the impulse toward transcendence in the great devotional literature. Separate chapters are devoted to the Baroque epic and the sacrificial hero, and the concluding discussion deals with the apocalyptic motif in the Baroque and the cultural forces that led to the emergence of Neoclassicism. Among the writers analyzed are not only such familiar figures as Shakespeare, Milton, Marvell, Montaigne, Corneille, Calderon, and Tasso but also Sponde, Quevedo, Gryphius, Vondel, and Huygens.
