Description

From the Dust Jacket Fly Leaf
The theme of this unusual and imaginative book is a young boy’s life on a Kansas farm — with his parents, his two brothers, and a generous collection of house pets, barnyard animals, snakes, possums, and neighbors. Gordon H. Soles has recaptured here, in these sixteen episodes, a child’s delighted wonder at the absurd, unpredictable happenings in the world around him. … A Kansas twister appears on the horizon to send an elderly neighbor flying through air “like a witch on a broomstick”; a tomcat takes tender care of the dying dog who had been his life-long enemy; a Christmas gathering becomes a verbal and physical free-for-all as the result of a misguided children’s game; a comfort-seeking black snake makes her nest in the family privy; a fire in the chicken house brings three hundred chickens into the kitchen and drives Paw into the barn for his evening reading. … This was the boy’s childhood — the entertaining adventure of growing up in the country — remembered and recounted here with simplicity, love, and humor.
